Avoid pickleball Injuries

Pickleball is a relatively low-impact sport that is generally considered to be safe and accessible for people of all ages and fitness levels. However, like any physical activity, there is still a potential for injuries. Here are some common pickleball injuries and ways to avoid them:

1️⃣ Sprained ankles: Ankle sprains are one of the most common injuries in pickleball. To prevent them, make sure you wear proper supportive shoes with good ankle stability. Be mindful of your footing, especially on uneven surfaces, and try to avoid quick and abrupt movements that could strain your ankles.

2️⃣ Tennis elbow: Tennis elbow, or lateral epicondylitis, is an overuse injury that can occur in pickleball due to repetitive motions. To avoid it, make sure to use proper technique and form while swinging the paddle. Gradually increase your playing time and intensity to allow your muscles to adapt. If you start experiencing pain or discomfort in your elbow, take a break and rest until it fully recovers.

3️⃣ Shoulder injuries: The repetitive overhead motions involved in serving and smashing can lead to shoulder injuries such as rotator cuff strains or impingement. Warm up your shoulders before playing by performing gentle stretches and rotations. Focus on strengthening the muscles around the shoulder joint through targeted exercises. Avoid excessive force or overexertion during your swings, and if you experience any pain or discomfort, seek medical attention.

4️⃣ Knee injuries: Quick lateral movements and pivoting can put strain on the knees, leading to injuries such as sprains or strains. To protect your knees, wear supportive shoes with good cushioning. Strengthen your leg muscles, including the quadriceps and hamstrings, through exercises like squats and lunges. Use proper technique when changing direction to avoid placing excessive stress on your knees.

5️⃣ Dehydration and heat-related issues: There aren't too many indoor pickle ball courts around DFW, and in hot weather, dehydration and heat exhaustion can be a concern. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water before, during, and after your games. Take breaks in shaded areas when needed and wear lightweight, breathable clothing.

6️⃣ General precautions: Always listen to your body and stop playing if you experience pain or discomfort. It's essential to have a balanced approach to the game and avoid overexertion. Remember, these precautions are general guidelines. If you're already experiencing some of these symptoms, our recommendation is to take a break from pickleball-ing and come give us a visit so we can get you back onto the courts ASAP.
